Restaurant Review: Ben & Jacks Steakhouse on 5th ave @BenandJackSteak

wp-1471360770638.jpg

Ben & Jack’s Steakhouse on 5th ave is a richly wood paneled traditional Steakhouse that was started by a group of waiters from famed Peter Luger’s Steakhouse. With The logo “Experience a Steakhouse like no other” puts pressure to deliver a unique and satisfying experience for the guests.

A large space in the heart of midtown Ben & Jacks is know for hosting many private and corporate functions upstairs as well as charity benefits to give back to the community. A family business with a rich history and a desire to deliver top quality food and service.

Meats are the specialty here and quality “Prime” cuts are grilled to perfection using very little seasoning to not take away from the natural flavor of the aged meats. We started our meal off with a very fresh yellowfin tuna tartare and baked clams. Followed by a rich and cheesy french onion soup, a must try. For the seafood lover Seafood platters are available and can be customized to include shrimp, lobster, crab, oysters, clams and more…

For the entree we chose the Surf & Turf. The lobster tail was huge and the filet mignon, medium rare, was tender and full of flavor. My companion also had the lobster but chose to try the 12oz Sirloin instead and was very satisfied with the steak. The restaurant specializes in Porterhouse steaks that can be served for 2 to 4 people.

As a side dish the Lobster Mac’ Cheese is highly recommended, made with quality cheese and chunks of lobster. Sautéed Spinach adds a little “green” and healthiness to the meal.

Dessert was a creamy creme brûlée and a traditional tiramisu accompanied by freshly brewed coffee and a dessert wine. An extensive wine and cocktail list is available and wine pairings are suggested by the experienced waitstaff.

Ben & Jack’s serves lunch and dinner daily and private rooms are available for corporate functions, rehearsal dinners, bachelor/bachelorette parties, holiday parties and more…

Restaurant Review: Olma Caviar Boutique & Lounge Upper West Side @OlmaCaviar

caviar-platter.jpeg.jpg

Olma Caviar Boutique & Lounge recently opened on The Upper West side and is an extension of the very successful boutique & bar in the food hall of The iconic Plaza Hotel. A much larger space than the Plaza here guests can sip champagne and dine at the bar or can recline on royal blue banquettes.

The Visionaries behind Olma and the idea that Caviar should be made accessible to everyone, and not to a select few are hospitality veterans Edward Eliachov and his partner Igor Eliachov who is president of Olma Food (www.olmafood.com), a manufacturer and wholesale distributor of the finest caviars since 2001.

The concept is that caviar should be available for purchase in single servings or platters and not in the usual per ounce way. At Olma a $5 dollar tasting is possible with a blini topped with Salmon Roe Caviar. To splurge a bit a single serving of Beluga is available for a reasonable $32.

Our tasting included The Caviar platter, which is highly recommended and included a tasting of Salmon Red, Paddlefish black, Hackleback, White Sturgeon and Russian Osetra Karat and Beluga. Arranged in price starting lowest on the left and ending in the top of the line Beluga on the right.

In addition Olma carries plenty of other dining options like salads will grilled chicken, mango duck or prosciutto, varies paninis like arctic char, salmon lox, and foie gras and more….

To complement the Caviar and other delicacies a cocktail menu is emphasized using only top shelf premium brands. Popular cocktails include the Moscow Mule, Rye Manhattan, Basil Martini, and the Uptown. In addition there is an extensive red and white wine list and a Champagne menu featuring Dom Perignon, Krug, Veuve Cliquot, Cristal, and Ace of Spades. Non- alcoholic options include a complete Italian Espresso bar and and a selection of fine green, white, and black teas.

Restaurant Review: Anisette Country French Wine Bar & Cafe @AnisetteNYC

awning.jpg

Anisette is a new French Country Wine bar & Cafe serving deliciously inspired Provencal food. Occupying the former space of Italian Restaurant La Follia, which is moving a few blocks away and opening soon, same owners. Located on a lively corner (226 3rd ave & 19th st) this restaurant serves dinner nighty and will begin serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner 7 days a week in September.

Chef/Owner and Sommelier Suzanne Letulle Riva delivers a varied menu with French Provencal specialties such as Housemade Chicken Liver Pot with Cornichons and Crostini as well as a few tasty Italian dishes her loyal customers crave from The La Follia days.

Some of our favorites included the very fresh tuna tartare, the Avocado toast, and the Goat Cheese Tart. The wines are chosen from Regions of France with a lot of focus on Rose during the summer months and a full bar and cocktail menu is available as well.

Brunch is served Saturdays and Sundays 11:30 – 3pm and is offered pre-fixe or A La Carte. Brunch specialties include Pain Perdu with Bananas & Coconut Whipped Cream and Classic Croque Madame with Baby Lettuces and French Viniagrette.

Restaurant Review: Industry Kitchen South Street Seaport @IndustryKitNYC

Industry Kitchen has many fine qualities, but none are as special as the view when seated outdoors on a beautiful summer evening. A panoramic view of both the Brooklyn and Williamsburg bridges and the passing sailboats on the East River create a special vibe that makes for a fun night of cocktails and cuisine with either friends, a special someone, or with the family.

Customer service is very important and “Eddie” our host and restaurant manager was very accommodating and assured us that this quality is something expected from all the Industry Kitchen employees to assure a quality experience for the guests. Many visitors hail from all over the globe and are looking for a trendy and fun experience by the Seaport. Industry Kitchen is also a favorite amongst locals and wallstreeters during lunch hours midweek.

We started off our meal with the blistering Shoshito Peppers ($9) with sea salt and olive oil. They were tasty and flavorful. We followed up with a Fresh Pot of Mussels ($15) infused with shallots, butter, garlic and white wine. For the main course The Grilled Marinated Miso Salmon ($23.50) was prepared just right with tomato-jalapeno- pineapple salsa accompanied with roasted potatoes and grilled asparagus. My partner had the Oven-Poached Shrimp, Cod, and Clams with Chorizo ($23) and was delighted by the spicy flavor of the red pepper aioli and Anaheim peppers.

Eddie insisted that we could not leave until we tried their specialty Wood Fired Pizza and brought us the “Bianca” ($14) with fresh mozzarella, aged pecorino and olive oil.

Our dining experience was enhanced with the wide variety of wines and cocktails, but truth be told, with a view like that, a glass of wine and a wood grilled pizza would be enough for a great night by the Seaport.

Owned by Merchants Hospitality Group, a hospitality company that owns upscale hotels, restaurants and residential properties around the world.

Philippe Chow is presided over by John Villa, who brings in his 10 years of experience running the Uber successful TAO group and contributing to making it what it is today. It is John’s vision to lead Philippe Chow to the next level, and we discussed his plans for the future, including an expanded and dedicated lounge area ,and how he is working towards gearing Philippe Chow towards a younger demographic while still catering to his loyal customer base.

Philippe Chow has been awarded many accolades since opening in 2005. The New York Observer deemed Philippe as having the “Best Peking Duck ” and was voted “Best in Chinese” by Zagat.

Our tasting began with an array of signature appetizers including the dumpling trio, chicken and beef satay and shrimp spring rolls. The chicken satay  is “World Famous” and it did not disappoint. The Red King Crab Platter for 2 is a seafood lover’s dream and the American Black Bass, half in black bean sauce and half ginger-garlic sauce is expertly prepared. Other signature dishes include The Beijing Chicken, 5 pound Whole Lobster, Green Prawns and of course the 7 pound Peking Duck.

Dessert is usually not a specialty in Chinese restaurants ,but Philippe Chow is known for his Baked Alaska and Red Velvet Cake.

An inspired cocktail menu with specialty cocktails like “The Lychee Martini” and an extensive wine list complete the dining experience. Philippe Chow is pricey, but you get what you pay for, and the experience is unforgettable, as is the clientele that ranges from celebrities, socialites, sports stars, and politicians.

Three Course Lunch Specials are offered Monday through Saturday 12:00-3:30 for $23.95 per person or the $32.95 Power Lunch which includes a Lychee Martini.

Restaurant Roundup: Restaurants to Check out this Spring in NYC

Natsumi Tapas merges Italian and Japanese cuisine with dozens of small plates from hot to cold like sashimi rolls, a spicy tuna caviar flatbread, seared salmon toro don with caviar and avocado and heartier dishes like the ciao meatballs and the short ribs. Surprisingly similar in textures and ingredients these cuisines fuse quite well and the results are delicious. Haru owner Barbara Matsumura created this concept in her desire to expand the traditional flavors of Japanese cuisine. Natsumi Tapas 323 Third Avenue (212) 889-2182

Saffron On The Upper West Side (320 Columbus Ave (212) 724-6363) is an authentic family friendly Indian Restaurant within walking distance of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Natural History. The chef incorporates spices, herbs, and exotic fuits to create traditional Indian dishes with a twist. The Sunday Brunch offers a huge selection and is priced around $15 bucks.

Alfredo 100 took over the space of Bice at 7 east 54th street. (212) 688-1999 Owner Russell Bellanca, formerly of Alfredo of Rome, relocated his Al Hirschfeld lithographs to the new space and will once again focuses on the generous portions of hearty pasta dishes such as their famous fettuccine alfredo and our favorite, the whole lobster with linguini in a spicy marinara sauce. The wine list is extensive and the lounge area has a nice vibe.

Frankie & Johnny opened up their new location recently at 320 west 46th st. (212) 997-9494. The bi-level 140 seat restaurant with a private dining room and an expansive bar houses their historic photo and poster collection of celebrities who used to frequent the restaurant. The menu is traditional steakhouse with a few Eastern European flavors like potato pancakes and calves liver with sautéed onions. The Ribeye that was perfectly cooked was our favorite! Top shelf spirits and a large wine list make this restaurant a favorite especially for theatre goers with a 3 course $30 pre-fixe menu.

Restaurant Review: Maroni Hot Pots @MaroniHotPots

eatsbeat24f-1-web.jpg

Husband and wife team Michael and Maria Maroni started Maroni Cuisine in Northport, Long Island 15 years ago and quickly became known for Grandma Maroni’s 100 year old gourmet meatball recipe. They began using enamel red pots for to-go orders in Long Island and recently brought this idea to Manhattan’s Upper East Side with their new spinoff Maroni Hot Pots( 307 east 77th st. 212-535-2866), http://www.maronihotpots.com).

The Hots Pots come in 3 sizes: small $30 (1-2 people), medium $45 (3-4 people, and $65 (6 to 8 people). If the hot pot is returned clean then the customer will receive a $4 dollar credit towards the next order.

The food is fresh and homemade and the small restaurant where the hot pots , as well as other items can be found on the menu is decorated with a music theme as inspired by music lover and chef Michael Maroni. Favorite hot pots are Grandma’s meatballs with or without spaghetti, Penne ala Vodka, Fresh Ricotta Ravioli, and Cacio E Pepe. Pans are also available in half  $28 (1-2 people) or  full  $40 (4-5 people). Homemade Chicken Parmesan and Chicken Milanese were our favorites. Other recommendations include the Lobster Bisque and Baked Clams Oreganata.

Village Prime Steakhouse: Uptown vibe in the heart of the Village

image The West Village is a neighborhood that’s always on trend, but it has been lacking one type of establishment and that is a refined steakhouse with an uptown feel, a classic seafood and steak menu plus a raw bar and a diverse wine and cocktail menu. At the helm of Village Prime is Executive Chef Vincent Ricciardelli and Chef/Owner Paul Singh who strive to give diners excellent steakhouse fare offering classic dishes like Lobster Bisque, Colossal Lumb Crab Meat Cocktail, a favorite of ours, Classic Caesar Salad as well as daily specials. The salmon, tuna, and steak tartare trio is a must! For serious meat lovers there is a wide range of USDA prime meats to choose from with popular options being The Cowboy Rib-eye 18oz. ($46), Skirt Steak 16oz.($32), and The Classic Porterhouse that can be shared from 2 to 4 diners and is priced accordingly. Our favorite happened to be The Surf N Turf ($58) which combines a juicy lobster tail and a choice of a meat entree. I chose the Filet Mignon in a Bearnaise Sauce and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned to my liking. Classic sides include a wide choice of potato options, creamed or sautéed spinach, lobster mac n cheese and much more. Dessert options include a creme brulee brought out in a  long white porcelain dish, cheesecake, a rich chocolate cake, and a choice of ice cream flavors as well. Village Prime is open 7 days a week and offers a 2 course lunch menu ($14.95) as well as a weekend brunch menu ($19.95) with unlimited champagne or sangria for a 90 minute seating time. image image Village Prime 302 Bleecker Street New York, NY 10014 212.727.7463 http://www.villageprimenyc.com

Capital Grille Wall Street: A must visit! @CapitalGrille

The Capital Grille is a classic steakhouse with rich interiors, a circular bar, and a vibe that exudes money. Powerhouse brokers gather within these walls to close deals and talk shop. The restaurant is a great place to celebrate a special occasion  or have a romantic night out with excellent service,  top notch food featuring dry aged steaks, fresh seafood, and an award winning wine list. d capital grille 8039 wall street new york ny 599x430 We started our meal with the seafood tower, overflowing with fresh lump crab meat, clams on the half shell, oysters and  a 1 pound lobster. We added some jumbo shrimp  into the mix. This can be a meal in itself. IMG_20150905_122705-2 For the main course I chose the Porcini Rubbed Bone In Ribeye with 15 Year Aged Balsamic with a side of Lobster Mac N’ Cheese. The steak was 22oz of moist flavor and the mac n cheese was filled with fresh lobster meat galore! My dining companion chose the 2lb broiled lobster stuffed with crabmeat which was equally delicious. capgrille roquefort tenderloin 031 All evening we enjoyed a variety of cocktails, beers and wine with our meal as well as a Classic Creme Brulee for dessert. Restaurant Review: Hummus 21 @hummus_21 #NYC

Hummus21_exterior_1-1745x1163 Hummus 21 is a welcome new addition to the upper east side. This Glatt Kosher Mediterranean Restaurant adheres to kosher traditions while bringing customers upscale mediterranean cuisine with a twist. The cocktail list features several classic drinks like the Margarita, Whiskey Sour and The Pina Colada, made with a cream substitute that complies with Glatt Kosher, but is cream like and very tasty. The wine list is quite varied especially if you prefer red wine. Hummus_21_-60_ZVe4Y6hSneLUQbjDiDTq-1725x1150 We started are our meal with what Hummus 21 has become known for and that is homemade hummus expertly prepared with paprika, extra virgin olive oil and fresh parsley served with a side of pita bread for dipping. Hummus is also offered as an entree and there are 6 toppings to choose from including Shawarma chopped chicken, lightly spiced roasted chicken, and jalapeno peppers just to name a few. We also ordered the falafel which was tasty made with fresh vegetables, herbs and chickpeas. The mediterranean salad is a good choice if you are craving a lighter/healthier option made with fresh tomato, cucumber, onion, parsley, mint, lemon in a vinaigrette dressing. Hummus_21_-51-1395x930 Hummus_21_-50-1290x861 Main Courses at Hummus 21 range from classic choices like The Mixed Kebab Platter, which was a huge portion of Chicken Kebab, Pargiot, Beef Kebab, and Kebab Sultani and can easily be shared to The Chicken Schnitzel, a crispy breaded chicken breast in za’atar. The Whole Branzino Fish is a customer favorite stuffed with baby spinach, herbs and fresh lemon.Hummus_21_-43-1815x1210 We finished our meal with a sampling of desserts including the amazing chocolate souffle and my favorite the classic Kadaif, shredded filo dough topped with vanilla cream cake and garnished with tahini and silan. Restaurant Review: Marcha Cucina @marchacucinabar

Lively Spanish restaurants with great ambience and food are hard to come by in Manhattan where mixing cocktails, food, and fun is equally important so I’m happy to see that Marcha Cocina has opened it’s second outpost on the trendy lower east side at 111 Avenue C.

marcha 520x346

The restaurant has 38 seats and is focused on moderately priced meals with sharing in mind. The tapas menu is quite good and priced from $7 to $12 a plate. Our favorites were the very tasty baby chorizo, a savory spanish sausage sautéed in garlic, white whine and olive oil and the the Patatas Bravas, crispy potatoes topped with brava aioli.

image1

image5

image2

The restaurant is known for their variety of flatbreads called “Cocas”. They offer wild mushroom, chorizo, and skirt steak ($13) which happened to be our favorites and are actually pretty substantial and very filling.

If your party is still hungry the entrees not to be missed are the Paella Con Langosta ($28), served with lobster, saffron valencia rice, shrimp, clams, mussels, and tomato escabeche and the Churasco (Skirt Steak)($24) served with demi, fondu, roasted potato and chimichuri sauce.

The cocktail menu is extensive and the waitstaff was very knowledgeable about mixing drinks to our liking. They even recommended a special hard to find Brugal rum, which quickly became a favorite.

Marcha Cocina is open 7 days a week from 3pm until 11pm Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Saturday nights. They are launching a new brunch menu shortly so stay tuned!

Rooftop Bar and Lounge: Up on 20 Hyatt Herald Square @HyattHS

2015 06 05 11 36 56 500370706

Herald Square is known for its shopping, Madison Square Garden and flurry of activity, so it was a nice surprise to find a new boutique style Hyatt smack in the middle, but designed uniquely to give the visitor a tranquil and serene experience at the end of the day.

Up on 20 is the newly designed rooftop bar and lounge now open for the warm summer months. With unobstructed views of both the Empire State Building and The Freedom Tower it is the perfect place for both locals and visitors to come for cocktails and a meal.

The menu focuses on small bites and platters made to be shared as well as burgers and salads. We started out with spicy pork crackling which paired nicely with our first cocktail, The Rum Julep. We then tried the mini meatballs which were juicy and tasty and served with hoison and sesame glaze and baby leek. The shrimp ceviche with pineapple and chili was very fresh and perfect for a summer day snack.

The best part of the meal was the grilled beef burger with brie cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion jam complemented with killer truffle fries.

The bar/lounge is open for brunch, dinner and for cocktails daily.

EXKI Midtown NYC

Last year a brand new casual eatery arrived in NYC all the way from Belgium. Exki was founded by three friends in 2001 and has since opened 78 restaurants across Europe, and in 2014 arrived on our shores and most recently opened the 76 Madison and 28th st. location, with 20 more planned in the metro area.

The premise is very simple at Exki, and that is to deliver fresh, seasonal, vegetable driven recipes, at great prices, while using green energy and reinforcing the importance of sustainability and giving back.

For Spring/Summer 2015 Exki added 11 new dishes , highlighting five that utilize Exki ‘s signature low fat yet tasty Vegetable Emulsions. Some of the favorite dishes include Tofu Thai, an entrée salad of roasted local organic tofu, ginger miso emulsion, rice vermicelli, spinach, romaine, carrots, daikon, cilantro, basil and peanuts and for meat lovers the B.F.T, roast beef, tomato fennel horseradish emulsion, arugula, radish and parmesan on a baguette.

New this spring is the variety of beverage options including five variations of green tea smoothies, each combined with seasonal fruits and blended to maximize flavor and freshness. My favorite was the Passion Tea with strawberries, mint, and green tea.

Restaurant Review: Juniper Bar @JuniperNYC

Juniper Bar is located in the heart of midtown, a block away from Macys Herald Square and Madison Square Garden, making it a perfect for cocktails and a meal after a day of shopping or an event at the Garden.

The large space is sleek and modern with flat screen TV’s, a dj booth, and a private space downstairs that can be rented out for private parties.

This casual restaurant has a wide variety of cocktails, many focused on gin. My favorite was the Strawberry Collins and my dining companion loved the Mango Margarita which used Patron Tequila, Mango Puree, and Cointreau.

strawberry collins 1

The Asian American fusion menu was inventive and tasty. We had the seafood spring rolls, which were crispy fried rolls filled with lobster, shrimp and scallops served with a citrus dipping sauce. Next we had the Vietnamese Chicken Wings. They were sweet and spicy and  a nicely spiced alternative to traditional wings served in a bar. The steak tacos were favorites as far as appetizers go. We love skirt steak and are picky about it’s preparation. The tacos are filled with steak, peppers, onions, guacamole, and chimichuri sauce.

20150420 202531

Juniper serves wonderful entrees in addition to their small plates with a focus on a large variety of burgers, wraps, and sandwiches. The Lobster Club is delicious with fresh Maine lobster, Applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, lemon aioli, served on toasted multi grain bread. Burger favorites are the Fire Breathing Burger filled with ghost peppers, pepper jack cheese and sriracha aioli. This burger is for the lover of a spicy addition to a meal! The Big Blue is the ultimate burger served with cheddar cheese, bacon, homemade blue cheese dressing, and topped with tempura onion rings.

Our dining neighbors raved about the Pan Roasted Chicken with Fingerling potatoes and The Bourbon Steak with sweet potato mash and sautéed green beans. We will make sure to try them next time.

Mamasushi Restaurant and Lounge @mamasu237

l Last Saturday night we ventured to Inwood specifically Dyckman Street, where a very lively dining and nightlife scenario takes place to taste the cuisine offered at Mamasushi, an Asian and Latin fusion restaurant where executive chef David Nunez brings his vast experience to develop dishes from both parts of the world that blend in a delicious way that you believe they actually were meant to be. To start our meal our very accommodating and knowledgeable waiter suggested we try the Pu Pu Platter for two, which is an appetizer platter created by the chef and is never the same twice. The waiter asks if anyone in the party is allergic and then leaves it to the chef to create the dish. We got to taste shumai, beef and chicken satay, fried oysters and large crabcakes.

We then got a traditional plate of fresh sushi to try that included salmon, tuna, shrimp, and eel. We also tried one of the specialty roles called the El Boulevard roll, which was spicy crab, salmon, shrimp, avocado and eel topped with spicy mayo. For the more adventurous diner there are several rolls that blend sushi with plantains, pico de gallo and other Latin staples.

20150411 202852images-1

For the main course the waiter suggested the Wagu beef that was expertly prepared and the Cod. Each dish blends Asian and Latin ingredients to create flavorfull and healthy entrees.

20150411 204807

For dessert the chef prepared a specialty dish, that if we guessed the main ingredient, we would get another free dinner. We did not! It turned out to be a plum tomato that was infused with light and sweet flavors, making it impossible to believe you were eating a fruit or vegetable, depending on your belief of what a tomato is!

20150411 213508

Mamasushi is as much a lounge as a restaurant with a very lively, trendy, and fashionable bar scene with a great cocktail menu and a section of the restaurant where the hosts bring you hookah’s right to your table.

With mother’s day around the corner it is a perfect place to bring the family for a fun afternoon or evening.

Whynot Bistro: A Taste of France in The West Village @WhynotbistroNYC

fullsizerender

Whynot Bistro and Jazz Bar, located at the intersection of Christopher and Gay Streets in the west village is an authentic french bistro in New York City. Upstairs there is a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and downstairs is a candlelit jazz bar called The Den that that holds almost nightly jazz sessions.

The food is freshly prepared and presented in an aesthetically pleasing way and can be paired with a variety of French wines or beer. The Ahi Tuna Tartare, Salade Nicoise and the Chicken liver mousse are staples there and are must haves! Diners seated next to us raved about the French onion soup and the Escargot.

For the main course I had the lamb chops and they were cooked just right and my dining partner had the filet mignon that was very tender and flavored to perfection.

You can’t leave a french bistro without dessert so we shared the creme brulee and the chocolate souffle which were delicious and a great way to finish off a meal.

The restaurant is spacious with a nice bar scene and a staff that is very friendly and look happy to be there.

The choices are simple but delicious, a 1.5 lb lobster served either steamed or grilled, with lemon butter or garlic butter. I had the grilled and it was juicy and plentiful. I chose the garlic butter and fyi, I recommend dipping the side of fries in it as well. To add a turf to the surf into your dinner the burgers are about 10oz. and come with fries and a side salad as well. We ordered a couple of lobster rolls for the table and they quickly become favorites of the night. The buns are toasted with garlic butter and they give you a full serving of lobster in one serving. If you happen to be in the mood for a bigger lobster the lobster tank is filled with huge lobsters, some as large as 12lbs. Priced at $20 dollars a pound they can be shared for a lobster feast!

We ended our meal with some creamy cheesecake and chocolate mouse. The dessert menu is the only part of the menu that changes occasionally. While eating our lobster we were served a variety of cocktails and some very fresh crisp beers on tap. If you bring the kids the bartenders know how to make some terrific non – alcoholic versions of their cocktail menu as well.

I am glad Lobster & Burger finally made it to our shores. A quality seafood restaurant at a good price is hard to find and we are sure to make it our go to for our future lobster cravings.
