Eastwinds Resort, A Hidden Gem in St. Lucia: Relaxation and Pampering We All Need Now

By Maya Litovsky

Eastwinds is a all-inclusive boutique resort in Gros Islet, St.Lucia. Minutes away from Rodney Bay, the property is set amidst tropical botanical gardens with humming birds, gorgeous flora and nature trails.

From the moment guests arrive the staff, many whom have been with the resort for decades greet you with a welcome drink and a smile. Within hours it seemed they remembered our names and our drink orders. Speaking to other guests at the property, some who have been coming for over 15 years, the staff’s attentiveness and attention to detail are the reasons why the return rate is so high and what truly sets this little gem apart from the other larger scale resorts on the island.

Located on Labrelotte Bay, one of the most pristine bays in St. Lucia, the proximity to the beach allows guests to sunbathe, swim and snorkel directly on property. The large free form pool features a swim up bar. The open air restaurant is only a few steps away, along with a beach bar that offers beachside service.

Dining is one of the most special activities at the resort. The executive chef typically chooses locally sourced ingredients some of which are grown on the on site garden. Breakfast is ala carte now due to Covid protocols, with a varied menu including omelettes, pancakes, and French toast made to order. If there is something a guest craves, the staff will make an effort to make it happen. Lunch is a casual affair, with a daily changing menu featuring seafood, meat, and vegetarian options.

Dinner is where Eastwinds shines. Full silver service, a four course menu designed by the chef, comprised of international and local specialties. The meals are paired with premium wines and cocktails. Nightly entertainment alternates between musicians and singers. There is a weekly Barbecue under the stars.

The rooms at the resort range from superior cottages to beach front suites. All the rooms feature premium bedding, air-conditioning, flat screen tv’s, robes, mini bars, free wifi and toiletries by Molton Brown.

While relaxation is the most important part of our stay, we did venture to snorkel, hop on a hobie cat, and paddle board. These activities are part of the all-inclusive package.

The resort also offers exclusive experiences to the guests, at an additional charge. Curated by Simeon, these can be a private all day sail to the Pitons, a sunset cruise or an island tour.

Weddings are quite popular at the resort. The experienced team will plan your special day and tailor it to your needs. The resort can accommodate a wedding of up to 70 plus guests. Children are welcome in case of a property buy out.

Covid protocols are strictly followed with masked staff, sanitizing stations, and a complimentary covid test done on property that guests need to board their flights home

Puglia, Italy A Dream Destination for Foodies, Culture Enthusiasts and Beach Lovers

On the Adriatic Sea lies the town Mola di Bari. Located in the region of Apulia or Puglia known for hundreds of miles of coastline, vineyards, olive trees, agriculture, white washed buildings and the famous aquaviva onion.

The Teatro Pubblico Pugliese consortium, made up of local authorities, politicians, and tourism experts from the Puglia region focuses on promoting Puglia’s cultural, historic, and culinary offerings.

Officials from Croatia, which lies opposite Bari on the Adriatic are also involved in promoting the region through meetings, workshops, and in our case interviews with both local and international journalists.

The climate in Puglia creates optimal conditions for farming, agriculture, and wine making. Fresh seafood, particularly octopus are ubiquitous to the region and are served raw.

The term “Il Crudo Barese” was coined in the region and is very different from what the westerner thinks Crudo means. A tradition that dates back many centuries, fresh catches are served, raw moments after being pulled from the sea.

On our journey we were joined by Ornella Fado, an Italian/American hostess, creator and producer of Brindiamo, a show on Amazon Prime that showcases Italian Cuisine and Culture both in New York and abroad.

Chef Pasquale Martinelli, born in Mola Di Bari, has been cooking traditional Puglian cuisine since 1990, after graduating from the IPSAR Institute. A firm believer in using only the best ingredients from the region and implementing them to create authentic dishes, along with the art of hospitality.

His future project is the launch of Alloro Private Culinary Concierge, A private chef and hospitality company based in New York. His mission is to craft menus for guests following the Mediterranean diet, using ingredients imported fresh from Puglia and cooking them on premises, private homes and yachts.

Chef Martinelli is working on setting up a gala dinner for 100 guests on a yacht cruising around Manhattan serving a 5 course menu highlighting artisan small production cheeses, semola, wines, Extra Virgin Olive Oil directly from Puglia.

His current website warmpalate.com will be transitioned to alloroprivatedinner.com in about a month’s time.

The Puglia region offers visitors a vast choice of adventures.

We visited the “Grotte di Castellana”, one of the most important attractions in Puglia. Located at the entrance of the Itria Valley, neighboring villages Alberobello and Polignano a Mare, these natural caves began forming 90 million years ago and to date have welcomed over 15 million guests. The tours through the caves offer splendid views through this natural wonder and can be short or long depending on the visitors preference.

The village of Alberobello, high in the hills in Puglia is a UNESCO world heritage site. Known for it’s “trulli”, whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs. The best way to experience the town is with a walking tour. A guide explains the history of the area, the significance of the architecture, and brings you inside these homes and introduces you to local artisans.

Polignano a Mare is our favorite area of Puglia. Limestone Cliffs lead to crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, where beach life is sizzling. Cafes and bars line the town and folks sunbathe on the rocks or on the beach below. We are coming back!

The fare at ECHO is American with a focus on seafood and the use of local ingredients. We enjoyed several meals at ECHO with breakfast being a favorite of ours. Lots of options from traditional to healthy with yummy smoothies to start off the day on the right foot.

At some point guests have to leave the resort to explore the island. Below is a list of our recommendations for where to eat, what to see and where to explore. This is only a small portion of what St. Simon’s has to offer and we look forward to returning to explore more!

Moon Palace Jamaica: All- Inclusive Luxury in Ocho Rios #MoonPalaceJamaica #ThePalaceLife

Moon Palace Jamaica is a luxury all-inclusive family resort located 90 minutes away from Montego Bay airport. With nonstop and direct flights from many US cities the easy to get to vacation destination makes a visit of any length possible.

Located on a white sandy beach, in the heart of Ocho Rios, the property has over 700 rooms ranging from deluxe resort view rooms to oceanfront palatial Presidential Suites with private pools.

There are 4 pools on the property with covered loungers and cabana beds. One of the pools has a waterslide, basketball nets and is deemed the activities and kids pool. The other pools are quieter with friendly bar service all day long. Our server remembered our favorite cocktails from day 1!

Kayaks, hobie cats, and water bikes are included for fun daytime activities and with a $1500 resort credit per 7 night stay guests can enjoy a sunset cruise, snorkeling excursion, swimming with the dolphins, a spa service, a romantic dinner on the beach, or an excursion to neighboring Dunn’s River Falls.

The dining is varied with so many options available. Momo serves up fresh sushi and traditional hibachi with entertainment during dinner. La Gondola serves contemporary Italian cuisine in a romantic setting. Pier 8 is an oceanfront restaurant serving fresh seafood daily with catch of the day specials. Buccaneers Reef is a casual buffet restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with themed evenings. Our favorite spot for lunch daily was the Jerk Chicken bar. Located poolside and open daily from 1230 to 430, the menu was simple, fresh jerk chicken smothered in a spicy jerk sauce served with corn on the cob. We literally ate there 5 out of the 6 days we were there, highly recommended! There is also The Boulangerie, that is open 24/7 near the lobby serving sandwiches, desserts, coffees and more and of course room service.

There is nightly entertainment and we were lucky enough to see the Island famous Silverbirds Steel Orchestra, who have been performing at the finest resorts all over Jamaica for years. An hour of energy filled dancing and drum playing to the hottest tunes out now.

No vacation is complete without a visit to the spa, at least in our opinion. The AWE Spa is Jamaica’s largest spa with 23 treatment rooms. The service begins with a water journey that includes hydrotherapy pools, a cold plunge pool, a warm pool with jet massage and a steam room and sauna. Guests are advised to arrive an hour before their scheduled spa treatment to enjoy this complimentary, with a spa service, experience. There are many massage, facials, and body treatments available. We chose a deep tissue massage, as stressed out New Yorkers, this was much needed before our return to the concrete jungle. Our technician had super strong hands and was very experienced. Spa day was very much enjoyed.

Palace Resorts Mexico: Cozumel Palace and The Grand at Moon Palace, world apart and beautifully unique @palaceresorts

Cozumel Palace is a unique resort and is a diver’s dream. A coral reef sits right beyond the property in the warm blue waters where guests can grab complimentary snorkel gear and jump right in. The fish is plentiful and there is a lifeguard that overseas snorkelers. Fun for the entire family and highly recommended. SCUBA diving excursions are available as are night dives.

The intimate resort has 169 suites, each with a double whirlpool tub and balcony. Traveling with the family as we were, we stayed in a loft suite which offers two floors with a bedroom with double beds upstairs and a full bath and a king size bed and full bath downstairs.

The resort is truly all inclusive with top shelf liquor available throughout the resort including an ensuite bar, in our case 2 bars, one on each floor! The dining options are plentiful and the cuisine is refined, a pleasant surprise as one doesn’t always find that in an all- inclusive. MOMO, the Pan-Asian restaurant was our favorite with teppanyaki cooking and fresh sushi, the kind us New Yorkers are used to and rarely find when traveling in the caribbean. Bugambilia’s serves authentic mexican cuisine in a laid back environment and the staff can make a mean margarita. For casual dining try Turquesa for breakfast and lunch buffets and for a-la carte Italian dining. Room service is available for breakfast in bed or cozy romantic dinner on the balcony.

The accommodations are luxe from grand swimup suites, family suites, garden view suites and the massive Presidential suites.

The dining options are endless with a fine dining middle eastern restaurant Habibi, Cielito Lindo Mexican restaurant, Tavola, an italian trattoria, Jade, a fusion asian restaurant, Le Chateau, an elegant adults only french restaurant, JC Steakhouse, a prime steakhouse requiring reservations and is highly recommended, a Tapas & Vino bar, Boulangerie, a quaint coffee shop, Caribeno, an authentic caribbean eatery, Cusco, a Peruvian restaurant along with food & drink choices at the adults only Unique Day Club, Beach club and much more.

The Grand section alone is a huge property with transport by open air shuttle being the most popular option, especially down to the beach club or if one wishes to venture to another section of moon palace to perhaps experience The Flowrider, a manmade surfing machine.

There is a waterpark at the Grand with thrill rides, a wave pool, a lazy river, tube rides, kids club and of course a bar serving tropical cocktails. Wired a teen club open till midnight with the newest arcade games, video games, and a snack and ice-cream bar. A disco for late night revelers, an adults only pool club with food & bar and DJ pumping music throughout the day as well as a bowling alley. Lounging by a different pool every day was no problem with 9 pools available, many with swim up bars.

Nightly shows are Vegas Style, rivaling many you actually see stateside in Vegas. A huge theatre with bar and snacks service offering everything from trapeze acts, contortionists, gymnasts and a Michael Jackson experience show.

The Grand offers a pampering spa, golf, conference rooms, wedding preparations, offsite excursions. Everything is grander at the Grand Moon Palace Cancun.

We liked how they are so convienently located in the middle of the resort and reservations are never required. Staying in the preferred section guests can dine in their own restaurant adjacent to the pool. El Patio, Himitsu, and Oceana were our favorites.

Daytime activities obviously include lounging by the pool or beach with cocktail in hand, while the more adventurous guests can venture to try many available watersports activities, water aerobics, scuba lessons and snorkeling.

Guests who want to leave the hotel and go on an excursion can purchase a tour in the main lobby or have the butler arrange it for them. Golf can also be arranged with three nearby courses including Punta Espada which is ranked #1 in Mexico and the Caribbean by Golfweek.

Nighty shows are actually quite good, our favorite was the Michael Jackson show. The Caribbean show was lots of fun with singers and dancers performing to local caribbean music.

For a true VIP experience the hotel offers the $100k Tony Awards package where you will feel like a celebrity in your own right. This package includes 7 nights in a gorgeously appointed suite with of course official Tony’s memorabilia, two VIP tickets to the Tony Awards at Radio City Hall, Styling by Christian Siriano, Hair & Makeup by Nomi Beauty, After Party tickets, and two tickets to any three of the nominated plays. The suite is tastefully decorated with loads of curated Tony’s memorabilia with most glorious being the 600 square foot terrace with a view of the Chrysler Building. The terrace is big enough to host your own Tony’s soiree. The suite is available year round for about 2K a night.

Every Tony’s aficionado must eat, so a meal or two in Sofitel’s french brasserie Gaby is a must. The french staff is very outgoing and knowledgable about the dishes served. Our favorites during the Sunday brunch were the homemade croissants and pastries, the authentic french onion soup and the classic eggs benedict. The Steak & Eggs looked delicious, a few neighboring guests were enjoying them. A full cocktail and wine list is available.

Cruising The BVI’s on the S/V Mandalay with Sail Windjammer @SailWindjammer1

AOP_4976_2.jpg

The S/V Mandalay was built in 1923 for E.F. Hutton as a gift for his wife. She sailed many oceans doing work as a research vessel, patrolling waters for the coast guard before being meticulously refurbished and regaining the waters as a cruising yacht. The S/V Mandalay can accommodate 58 passengers comfortably and a crew of 24.

Based in Grenada The S/V Mandalay sails the Caribbean on 6 night or 13 night cruises year round. Captain Sly commands a crew whose main responsibility is to welcome guests into a new found family and treat them to a cruising experience unlike any other.

The Sails are raised by hand each time she sails with the sound of Amazing Grace. There are traditional sailing traditions like afternoon rum swizzles, crab races, late night deck parties under the stars. Captain Sly, a decorated Captain overseas every aspect of the cruise from safety and island talks to being the entertainment at the Passenger and Crew costume party.

Our cruising adventure began in Tortola. We flew from JFK to San Juan and on to St.Thomas on JetBlue and then took a high speed ferry to Tortola. JetBlue is our favorite airline to the Caribbean with a positive and cheerful crew as well as comfortable aircraft with direct tv, free wifi, and complimentary snacks. Once in Tortola we were greeted at the dock and transported to the sailing ship by boat. Greeted by the staff with rum swizzles it was time to get kick back and relax and enjoy a week of sailing the blue waters of the British Virgin Islands.

The BVI’s were hit hard last year by hurricane Irma and are still in the midst of recovery. The locals are proud of their homes and are working hard to restore them back to their former glory and improve on them as well.

Our ports of call included Virgin Gorda, Cooper Island, Norman Island, Yost Van Dyke, Anguilla, and St. Maarten. Captain Sly likes to keep the daily itinerary a surprise until Captain Story time, and will sometimes go where the wind conditions are favorable.

Each port is a beautiful beach or cove with beach bars, restaurants, shops and activities like snorkeling, kayaking, scuba, and a tour to the Baths in Virgin Gorda. Every morning a tender brings guests to shore for beach time with tender service available throughout the day to and from the ship.

The ship itself is elegant with rich teak wood throughout and cabins outfitted with comfortable amenities. Cabin categories range from standard below deck to a suite complete with a King Sized bed. We stayed in a Admiral Suite on the main deck outfitted with a full-size bed, an upper pullman, ample storage, and central AC.

Each day the chef prepares three meals and a variety of snacks. The variety is limited, but the food quality is top notch, and he does take in allergy and vegetarian requests. There is also a daily afternoon snack hour, paired with rum swizzles of course!!!

We had a fantastic time exploring the islands with Sail Windjammer and look forward to trying out the Grenadine itinerary in the near future. For more info and to book your cruise visit: sailwindjammer.com

Families are welcome on the Mandalay with specialty cruises available during the summer months. We do recommend this cruise for older kids as there are no nannies or kids club aboard.
