The Black Derby is the kind of eatery that reminds of why the west village restaurant scene is so important to New York. Set in a 130 year old landmarked building on a quaint block, the name derived from one of the founder’s fathers, Jack Brady. a long time west village resident, who wore his black derby daily, his original black derby still sits in the bar next to his favorite whiskey.
The cuisine is “New York at Heart” ,a blend of American and French fare using the highest quality ingredients. Recommended dishes include the The Black Derby Goat Cheese Sliders, a Pat LaFRieda Hanger Steak Frites, Max’s Famous burger new for 2017 and our favorite The Daily Market Fish. The must have dessert is The Black Derby made with homemade molasses and grapefruit zest doughnut, creamy bourbon ice cream, dark chocolate ganache and branded cherries.
The bar scene is an important part of The Black Derby experience. An extensive wine and beer menu is available with many classic specialty cocktails like The Mermaid Avenue, made with Brooklyn Gin, Lime, and St. Germain liqueur.
