Mike’s Harder Lemonade X Lalo Yunda Collaboration @lalotattoos #HouseofMonkey @Harder

I have wanted to get a tattoo for years and even though my son is a tattoo aficionado with multiple tattoos, I was still reluctant. However, When I was recently invited to attend a pop up shop at The House of Monkey, owned by tattoo artist extraordinaire Lalo Yunda and his lovely wife, I decided to take the plunge. Lalo Yunda hails from Columbia and began his career with a homemade tattoo machine while developing a style of tattooing mixing fantasy and reality with difficult techniques and intricate colorful designs.

To celebrate The launch of Mike’s Harder Tennessee Barrel Lemonade, Harder collaborated with Lalo Yunda to create one of a kind tattoo designs on the Limited Edition Collectible Cans. Lalo, who appeared on Season 2 of Spike TV’s “Ink Master” is a self taught artist whose signature style is described as “magical realism”, which includes mythical elements combined with true to life images. The HARDER inspired tattoos feature designs such as a Skull, Snake, Dragon Horse, Bird, Jellyfish, and Coo-Coo Girl.

Yunda believes “Tattooing is one of the biggest art revolutions in history, and over the course of the next few years, collecting tattoos will of the same caliber as collecting fine artwork”.

Windstar Cruises: Portugal, Spain, France and Ireland James Beard Culinary Cruise @WindstarCruises @Beardfoundation #WindstarCruises

Star Legend

Windstar Cruises is a luxury cruise line with a fleet of six yachts, three of which are their signature sailing yachts, and the other three, the newly refurbished motor yachts (Star Legend above) to the tune of $8.5 million dollars each. This year Windstar partnered with The James Beard Foundation to offer three voyages throughout Europe and Northern Africa with award winning Chefs and Sommeliers providing rich culinary experiences in each destination.

The yachts fit 210 people in luxurious suites, many with balconies, bathtubs, and walk-in closets. Small enough to enter rivers and ports where larger ships cannot go, but big enough to provide amenities like pools, jacuzzis, full-service spas, gym, multiple dining options and entertainment venues.

Our voyage began in Lisbon, Portugal a coastal city with old world charm that is seeing a huge growth as a premier destination with a growing foodie and art scene. Fashion Week in Lisbon is now drawing designers from all over Europe and abroad twice a year.

Our first port of call was Porto, Portugal (Day 1). A coastal city in Northwest Portugal known mostly for the many bridges ,and for the producers of Port Wine. Being on a culinary cruise with daily wine tastings, the Sommelier, William Davis, went into Porto and shopped for favorites to introduce to guests that evening. Windstar provides two complimentary culinary excursions on each sailing. Guests can choose which port of call to attend these immersive activities. Wines offered during nighly wine tastings are complimentary during event and at dinner.

The next two ports of call( Day 2 & 3) were in El Ferrol and Gijon, Spain. Two old cities in the Province of A Coruna on the Atlantic Coast, and in Austurias, respectively. El Ferrol is known to be major naval shipbuilding center for Spain and Northern Europe. Gijon is located on the Bay of Biscay. Gijon is mostly recognized these days for having one of the best International Film Festivals in Spain.

Days 4 & 5 We were docked in beautiful Bordeaux, France. Windstar offers overnight stays in cities where most cruise lines only stay for the day. Part of the Windstar program is a complimentary excursion to a French Chateau (Chateau Kirwan) and Vineyard. A catered cocktail party awaits the guests with delicious food, wines from the vineyard and live music.

Day 6 We were in La Rochelle, France. A coastal city in southwestern France. A busting marina with tons of outdoor cafes and shops. Renaissance architecture mixed with colorful hillside homes. Many Europeans venture here for weekend stays and boating activities during the summer months.

Day 7 was the first of two enrichment days at sea. A time to unwind and enjoy activities on board including cooking demonstrations with James Beard award winning chef Maria Hines. Guests can also arrange galley tours and lectures with Sommelier William Davis.

Day 8 was spent in  Saint- Malo, France. A coastal city in Brittany with the downtown located in a Walled City and the Saint-Malo cathedral as the centerpoint. A popular Windstar excursion is the Oysters of Cancale tour. Driving through the countryside until you reach the Oyster farm, a family run business producing some of the freshest oysters that are sold locally and exported worldwide.

Another highlight of the cruise was the extravagant deck BBQ, well more like an enormous variety of Seafood, Meats, Paella, Salads, BBQ, Desserts and more. Combined with live music involving the ship’s crew, who have way more unlisted talents then you would imagine in their job description.

Day 9 was another relaxing enrichment day and the final day to indulge in spa services, learn about wine, or work -out after nine days of James Beard inspired eating and drinking.

Day 10 Arrival in Dublin, Ireland. Windstar offers post-cruise packages as well as daily excursions for guests with late flights.

One of the highlights of the cruise was a chance to dine with James Beard COO/CFO Marilyn Platzer and her husband Kenneth who was on board as well. We discussed how the James Beard institute raised over 6.5 million dollars in scholarship money to aspiring chefs to build careers in the culinary arts. The institute funds research in sustainability, environment, and the growth of the food industry.

Restaurant Review: Sixty 5 On Main Nyack, NY @sixty5onmain

Nyack is known for it’s dining and entertainment scene and is also seeing a growth in art galleries and the hotel industry, with the recently opened NYC outpost of the TIME Hotel. As more New Yorkers are searching for weekend getaways, that are convenient and unique, yet exciting the foodie scene is following in their footsteps and opening Eateries to satisfy their needs.

Sixty 5 on Main has an international feel with furniture, many one of a kind pieces, that were obtained from markets or antique stores ,while the foundation is local with some of the wall panels and tables made from trees in the Hudson Valley.

The Bar is the focal point of the space with a hand-made wine cellar showcasing bottles from the local Hudson Valley, to France, Italy, and Australia. The bartenders create specialty crafted cocktails depending on the season. Chef Moshe Grundman, formerly of Michelin-star winning restaurant Oceana, in NYC, created a menu with small plates perfect for sharing.

The cuisine is a mix of international flavors with a focus on Mediterranean dishes and plates with an Asian flare, utilizing locally sourced ingredients from the Hudson Valley. Our meal consisted of a tasting menu featuring fresh tuna crudo, fluke ceviche, fried calamari, meatballs on spaghetti cakes, a favorite, short rib fritters and Homemade ravioli, also a favorite and highly recommended.

The Music at 65 Main sets this restaurant apart with performers ranging from local bands to performers brought in from other venues. Jazz and Blues fills the room on many nights. There are three rooms in the venue with the Main Room, where all the action happens, The Cave Room, a dark intimate lounge ,and The Library, a smaller private space perfect for private parties and events.

Restaurant Review: Machiavelli on The Upper West Side @Machiavellinyc

Walking into Machiavelli is like walking into a Museum with “Renaissance” inspired murals, upholstered chairs and banquets, candelabras and a a live piano player on most nights.

A Northern Italian eatery owned by Nathalie de La Fontaine who lived in Northern Italy for several years and managed La Foccaccia in the West Village. Nathalie recently chose a new chef Gian Pietro Ferro, who was the executive chef at Osteria al Doge and head chef at Fiorello. His job was to revamp and revitalize the menu to celebrate the restaurant’s fifth anniversary.

Machiavelli’s menu focuses on pasta rolled by hand, pizzas, salads, and a variety of classic Italian dishes. We started our meal with the highly recommended “Sformato di Spinaci”. A flan made with fresh ricotta and spinach, topped with a classic fontina white truffle scented fondue cheese sauce.

The “Bruschetta”  is made to order with traditional red and yellow tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, basil over Tuscan Bread.

My favorite was the “Carpachio di Manzo”, thin slices of seared rare beef, baby arugula, grand padding and truffle oil. I am very picky with my Carpachio ,so I was pleasantly surprised by the texture and the flavor.

Farfalle Neri al Salmone

The pasta course was the most anticipated since this is what Machiavelli prides itself on. The “Farfalle Neri al Salmone” with Canadian Salmon in a pink sauce was served al dente with large chunks of salmon.

The “Tagliatelle Al Ragu di Vitello”, egg pasta ribbons served with veal ragu is also a very popular choice.

 Lamb Chops

Traditional Northern Italian Specialties include The “Pollo all Chichi”, breaded free- range Chicken Milanese served with baby arugula, onions and tomato, and my guests recommended “Costoletta d’Agnello alle erbe fresche”, Roasted Colorado Lamb Chops served with roasted potatoes and veggies.

Prosciutto di Parma Pizza

The Pizzas at Machiavelli are made using the traditional Italian method with extra virgin olive oil, san marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. They are very good sized portions and can be shared. Pictured above is our favorite the “Prosciutto di Parma”, tomato, mozzarella, tomatoes, arugula and prosciutto di Parma.

 Tirimisu

Dessert was a traditional and very tasty Tirimisu, However many options are available. The wine selection was plentiful with many choices, either by the glass or bottle along with well crafted cocktails.

Restaurant Review: Halifax at The W Hotel in Hoboken, NJ @WHoboken

unspecified-2.jpg

Halifax recently opened at the W Hotel in Hoboken, the only hotel in downtown Hoboken, NJ ,a city that is seeing quite a resurgence with many eateries and bars popping up as scores of young New Yorkers are flocking to the area with several luxury living options, many with views of NYC, with only a 15 minute PATH train commute to midtown.

A creative collaboration between owner Michael Barry and Executive Chef Seadon Shouse, who hails from Nova Scotia himself. Halifax is a taste of the Northeastern coast with land and sea options that are locally sourced from the Mid- Atlantic to New England.

Architect and designer Gwathmey Siegel and Peter Bentel of Bentel & Bental, whose other past projects include Le Bernardin, Gramercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park and Craft, to name a few collaborated in creating a space that fits the concept the owner and chef envisioned. The decor at Halifax captures the essence of the menu which evokes the sea, sky, and coastal farmland with light blues, light greens, whites, and grays.

Our dinner began with a serving of popcorn dusted with smoked seaweed and horseradish along with  warm house baked rolls served with butter and sea salt personally harvested by Chef Shouse from the atlantic ocean.

The first course on the tasting menu, or ala carte if preferred is the highly recommended smoked fish, charcuterie and cheese boards for the table. There are options to choose from one category or from all three for your party.  Our favorites were the maple glazed smoked wild salmon, the duck liver pate and Slyboro goat cheese.

The raw bar selection is extensive with East and West Coast Oysters, Long island Littleneck Clams, Poached Shrimp, and Seadon’s house smoked mussels. The selection of Crudo changes depending on the season, with the current section being the Montauk fluke, topped with lime, fresno chillies, radish and sun chokes.

For the entrees the Maine Lobster Rigatoni was a favorite with large chunks of lobster meat, trumpet mushrooms and lemon. For land lovers the Smoked Amish Chicken, brined and lightly smoked in-house, then roasted, served with warm salad of toasted bread and local greens, with currants, pine nuts and scallions was deliciously prepared and served. Other guest favorites were the NJ Lamb Ragout with ricotta cavatelli, tomato confit and chanterelles.

Pastry Chef Stuart Max who has worked with Chef David Burke at Fromagerie and with Dominic Filoni at Avenue created a dessert menu with Northeastern inspirations including Boston Cream Pie, Maple Cream Brûlée, Strawberry Rhubarb and white chocolate parfait and Apple Fritters with caramel sauce.

Halifax has a rich wine menu that can be paired with dinner with a knowledgeable Sommelier at the helm. Wines come from upstate New York, the vineyards of Long Island including The North Fork and other locations along the coast along with traditional wine choices from California, France and Italy. Beers on tap come from Departed Soles in Jersey City, Singlecut Beersmiths from Queens and other local breweries.

Halifax is open 7 Days a week. On weekends the Bubbles Brunch with unlimited small plates and a bottle of Champagne is served from 11am -3pm

Fox & Jane Salon Lower East Side @FoxandJane

wp-1475425843738.jpg

Co- Founder and Creative Director Lorean Cairns opened this flagship location in 2011 and since then has expanded to 3 locations in NYC, Brooklyn, and San Diego. Not an easy feat in the hair business, especially in NYC where salons are a dime a dozen. The Fox & Jane approach is synonymous with street fashion, current trends, expertly trained staff specifically in balayage, dramatic color changes, and fresh hair cuts

Lorean herself has built a loyal following and is now in demand doing editorial work as well as being a beauty and trend forecaster for several publications. Her partner Billy Canu is the marketing force behind the operation.

After a long summer of pools, the beach, humidity and products my hair was ready for a makeover for fall. Jackie Marie, a lovely and professional colorist & stylist in the LES location created a plan for hair that had included a single process to match my roots and go a little darker, more to my natural hair color, then she balayaged warm/dark blonde tones throughout my hair for an updated, even look.  My hair feels healthy and shiny. The relaxed and friendly vibe complete with wine makes for a happy hair experience.
